IU Health - Operations Intern

I interned with IU Health Physicians—Department of Medicine. This internship gave me hands-on experience in healthcare operations and management, working closely with clinic managers, practice administrators, service line administrators, and the associate vice chair of operations.

My primary responsibilities include shadowing leadership roles to understand the operational aspects of a healthcare organization and working on a project to enhance provider efficiency. Specifically, I’ve collaborated with the Northside Kidney Clinic team to develop a streamlined process for clinic space management, addressing challenges providers face in balancing their multiple responsibilities. The culmination of this project will be a presentation of findings and recommendations to leadership.

Outlined in my Internship Agreement, my learning objectives included:

1. Understand healthcare operations: By shadowing various leaders, I gained a deeper understanding of how departments operate efficiently.

2. Improve communication and teamwork skills: Collaborating with administrators and clinical providers honed my ability to convey ideas effectively and work in diverse teams.

3. Complete a meaningful project: I successfully developed a solution for clinic scheduling challenges and will present my project to leadership, fulfilling this objective.

Through this experience, I’ve further developed skills in problem-solving, adaptability, and professional communication. I’ve made a significant contribution by identifying barriers to provider efficiency and offering actionable solutions. However, I recognize areas for growth, particularly in mastering data analysis tools and gaining deeper financial management expertise in healthcare operations.
