IU Health - Operations Intern
This internship has been a transformative experience, giving me firsthand exposure to the operations and leadership roles within the Department of Medicine. Shadowing clinic managers and administrators has enhanced my understanding of clinical workflows, patient scheduling, and problem-solving in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
I interned with IU Health Physicians—Department of Medicine. This internship gave me hands-on experience in healthcare operations and management, working closely with clinic managers, practice administrators, service line administrators, and the associate vice chair of operations.
Internship Site
My primary responsibilities include shadowing leadership roles to understand the operational aspects of a healthcare organization and working on a project to enhance provider efficiency. Specifically, I’ve collaborated with the Northside Kidney Clinic team to develop a streamlined process for clinic space management, addressing challenges providers face in balancing their multiple responsibilities. The culmination of this project will be a presentation of findings and recommendations to leadership.

I’ve made a significant contribution by identifying barriers to provider efficiency and offering actionable solutions. However, I recognize areas for growth, particularly in mastering data analysis tools and gaining deeper financial management expertise in healthcare operations.
Personal Development
My coursework has directly influenced my role during the internship. Classes like Strategic Planning in Healthcare Management and Healthcare Marketing prepared me to analyze organizational challenges and consider innovative solutions. My healthcare finance skills were used to strengthen my understanding of budgetary constraints in healthcare projects. Interestingly, some real-world practices, such as the prioritization of immediate operational needs over long-term planning, contradicted the strategic emphasis taught in class. This experience highlighted the need for flexibility in applying academic theories to practical scenarios.
